Program Description:

Palm Beach University’s Doctorate in Substance Use and Addictive Disorders trains clinicians to be well versed in major models of addiction disorders.  PBU prepares professionals to be specialists in Addiction Psychology through advanced training in addictive disorders , including theory, research, assessment , and treatment. This program is taught in person.

Program Outcomes:

Upon Completion, participants will be able to:

Teach at a college level about addiction
Be a clinical or program director at an addiction recovery facility
Design programming
Conduct research in the field Addiction Psychology
Provide psychotherapy to those with addiction

Objectives:

  1. To prepare students with the content knowledge required achieve success in their addiction related professional endeavors. 
  2. Describe the theories of addictive disorders and addiction psychology 
  3. Describe how addiction impacts the brain 
  4. Articulate counseling interventions and acquire advanced counseling skills for working with addiction. 
  5. Examine and apply group therapy models and associated techniques. 
  6. Demonstrate the capacity to assess, evaluate, and diagnose addictive disorders.

Internship Course

Palm Beach University requires students to complete an internship course for the Couple and Family Therapy program. The internship course is offered in three consecutive semesters, Spring, Summer and Fall. Students may repeat this course for credit. Each semester students accrue a minimum of 100 supervised hours of direct service to clients in
an approved clinical setting. The course covers topics of: professional roles and functions in clinical settings, ethical decision making, strategies for providing marriage and family therapy with diverse populations. The course also examines issues of pedagogy for the Marriage and Family practitioner.
