Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology

This program offers a unique interdisciplinary opportunity in the field of human sexuality and clinical therapy. The program components include 40 credit hours of core coursework (which includes 50 hours of clinical supervision), 20 credit hours of dissertation work (10 credit hours of dissertation research and 10 credit hours of dissertation defense), and a comprehensive exam. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to be the next generation of professionals with critical, in-depth content knowledge in human sexuality, research and analysis skills, social and relational dynamics, and clinical expertise. Drawing on gender studies, critical theory, sex therapy, public health, education, sexology, social construction, queer theory, anthropology, and public policy, students will be uniquely Form 605 (Effective July 2013) Page 7 of 14 qualified to address a wide range of topics from a holistic and integrated clinical perspective.

Program Description:

The Clinical Sexology program is committed to providing high quality education and to prepare licensed psychologists. psychotherapists. Social workers, and other mental health and medical providers to provide clinical sexology to their already licensed practice. The program does not prepare unlicensed students to meet initial licensing requirements in any field. This program is taught in person

Program Outcomes:

Upon Completion, participants will be able to:

✇ Recognize the major bio-psychosocial forces that shape sexual functioning
✇ Use the criteria for assessment and diagnosis of psychosexual disorders as described in the current edition of the DSM-5
✇ Evaluate the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, including the socio-cultural factors influencing sexual values and behavior, and specify ways to encourage loving relationships between partners and within families
✇ Identify a variety of sexual orientation and gender-related issues, and the Identify a variety of sexual orientation and gender-related issues, and the importance of ensuring basic ethics, sexual rights
✇ Differentiate between physical and psychological causes of sex dysfunctions

✇ Critique the current research in clinical sex therapy
✇ Discuss sexual health issues, including safer sex practices and the effects of substance abuse on sexuality
✇ Describe the psychosexual treatment methods for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse
✇ Explain the immediate & deeper issues underlying sexual dysfunction
✇ Explain atypical sexual behaviors, including paraphilias and compulsive/impulsive sexual behavior
✇ Utilize theory and methods of sexuality counseling and psychotherapy, including several different models
✇ Apply theories and methods of approach to a variety of interventions in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems
✇ Distinguish theories and method of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders
✇ Employ the principles of consultation, collaboration, and referral in a sex therapy practice.
✇ Discuss techniques for evaluating clinical outcomes
✇ Compile, review and evaluate a list of videos, journal articles and books to formulate treatment plans
✇ Analyze. interpret and discuss sex therapy cases
